Beam Invader is a shoot 'em up arcade game released in 1979 by the Japanese developer Tekunon Kougyou. It is widely recognized as a "clone" or knock-off of the massive 1978 hit Space Invaders.
While the gameplay is nearly identical—shooting rows of descending aliens while hiding behind destructible shields—Beam Invader introduced a few unique (and sometimes controversial) changes.
Unlike the original Space Invaders, which used a joystick or buttons for horizontal movement, Beam Invader utilized a rotary paddle (dial) to move the player's ship.
Critics and players have noted that the enemies in Beam Invader shoot much more rapidly than in Space Invaders, making it significantly harder to dodge bullets.
