Space Invaders (Arcade) 1978
Space Invaders is a highly influential fixed shooter arcade game, released by Taito in 1978, where players defend Earth from descending aliens. The game involves moving a laser cannon horizontally across the bottom of the screen to shoot down rows of descending, pixelated aliens. As more aliens are destroyed, the remaining aliens and their accompanying background music speed up, creating a natural and unintentional (at the time of development) difficulty curve that became a popular gameplay element. The player's cannon is partially protected by four stationary defense bunkers, which are gradually destroyed by alien projectiles and the player's own shots. A special "mystery ship" (UFO) occasionally flies across the top of the screen and awards bonus points (up to 300) if destroyed. The game has endless gameplay; defeating all aliens brings another wave that starts one row lower and moves faster. Space Invaders is considered one of the most influential and greatest video games ever, having ushered in the golden age of arcade video games and Japan's long-lasting global success in the video games industry. It inspired several prolific game designers to join the industry and influenced numerous games across different genres. The game has been ported and re-released in various forms, including the 1980 Atari 2600 version. More than a hundred Space Invaders video game clones and remakes were released for various platforms and spawned many sequels.
