Pagsanjan Falls—also known locally as “Magdapio Falls”—is one of the most iconic natural attractions in the Philippines. Hidden deep within a lush gorge in Laguna, the falls cascade dramatically from about 90 meters (300 feet) into a cool, jade-green basin surrounded by steep, jungle-covered cliffs. The atmosphere is refreshing and slightly misty, with the constant roar of falling water echoing through the canyon. The journey to the falls is just as famous as the destination. Visitors typically start from the town of Pagsanjan or nearby Cavinti and ride a traditional wooden canoe guided by skilled boatmen. This river adventure is often called the “Shooting the Rapids” experience along the Bumbungan River. As the canoe moves upstream, boatmen expertly navigate through a series of river rapids, using long poles and paddles to push against rocks and currents. The ride passes through a narrow gorge with towering rock walls, overhanging vines, and occasional small waterfalls trickling down the cliffs. During calmer stretches, the scenery is peaceful and almost meditative, while the rapids add bursts of excitement and adrenaline. After reaching the base of the falls, visitors can board a bamboo raft that takes them closer—right beneath the powerful curtain of water—where you can feel the force of the cascade and enjoy a natural “water massage.” Overall, the Pagsanjan Falls and river rapids experience combines scenic beauty, cultural tradition, and thrilling adventure, making it one of the most memorable eco-tourism activities in the Philippines.
