Three semester hours. Living in a diverse society provides counselors and counselors-in-training the opportunity to encounter a wide array of cultures in their practices. This course allows students to explore their own cultures and the biases and internalized messages about those who are different from themselves. Awareness, in turn, leads to the possibility of positive change more consistent with the ethics and aspirations of the counseling field. Examines client diversity with respect to ethnographic, demographic, and status variables, and challenges culturally biased assumptions which influence the provision of mental health services. This course will address theories and research on counseling in a multicultural setting and current issues/concerns and counseling practices within the multicultural context. Prerequisite: PSY 101.
