The Bow Wave

Monday Melodies #19. Good morning everybody and May The 4th Be With You!!! Here is number 19 in the series 'Monday Melodies'. This is another of my own songs which probably needs a wee bit of explaining for those non-Submariner types. When on the surface in a Nuclear powered submarine (mainly!!), as long as the diesels engines are not running and the submarine its not ventilating there is almost no noise at all, just the wind and, more prominently, the Bow Wave. Any vessel that is moving through the water creates a bow wave as it pushes the water aside. On a submarine this rises up on the bow due to the shape and sits a top it like one of those huge V shaped pillows you can get (following me so far??). It's a strange and unique thing, once experienced never forgotten. It can also make you feel quite insignificant as there is no land in sight, just the ocean and the sky. Mother Nature has you firmly in her grasp!! Dolphins and other cetaceans come and play on the bow wave and the sight at dusk when the plankton blooms is mesmerising and spooky too. Also, when it's dark, it's dark. There is no artificial light apart from the navigation lights and, on a cloudless night, you can see billions of stars, quite unlike the view from your back garden. Few ever get to experience this and for those who do, it leaves an indelible mark on your soul. Now all my submarine chums think I've gone soft but, come on, admit it, you know exactly what I'm on about!!!
