The Scripture Practice Session 04: Memorize
Memorization was a rich part of Jesus’ Jewish heritage and a practice of his followers through history. Though the practice may seem unnecessary in an era of unprecedented access to information, it’s nevertheless vital. Memorization helps us deeply absorb Scripture in our bodies and create, as pastor Ken Shigematsu calls it, an “inner library” that we can draw on throughout the day. In John 16, Jesus promised his apprentices that the Holy Spirit would bring to remembrance his words. But to do that, we have to have Jesus’ words in our memory — a challenging effort, but one that offers deep rewards as we learn to anchor ourselves moment-by-moment in the words of God. This session is from the Scripture Practice made by Practicing the Way. All of our resources are free, thanks to the generosity of The Circle and other givers. Run the full Practice with your church or small group, and get access to other free resources including Companion Guides, the Rule of Life Builder, and the Spiritual Health Reflection, at https://launch.practicingtheway.org/.
