Thought and Memory (Original Version)
A song based on Odin's ravens, Huninn and Muninn. Thought and Memory (Verse 1) As the dawn breaks, the ravens take to flight, To circle the earth till the coming of night. Twin shadows of spirit, they ride the air, Nothing is hidden from their piercing stare. (Verse 2) High in the sky where chill winds blow, Two dark shapes see what happens below. Over the rivers and the wide, mountainous Earth, They see battles and death, and life given birth. (Chorus) Huginn and Muninn fly far and see all, From farmers' fields to a great Jarl's hall. No sight or action can hide from their eyes, Their vision sees through deceit and all lies. (Verse 3) Huginn is thought, flying fast as an arrow, Soaring over the land and the burial barrow. He gathers the wisdom of all he can find, To bring back the truth to Odin's wise mind. (Verse 4) Muninn is memory, full of what came before, Remembering all things from the days of yore. He holds to the past and tales of old, More precious than silver or glimmering gold. (Chorus) Huginn and Muninn fly far and see all, From farmers' fields to a great Jarl's hall. No sight or action can hide from their eyes, Their vision sees through deceit and all lies. (Verse 5) The All-Father waits on his high golden throne, For the secrets gathered as his ravens have flown. They land on his shoulders, whispering into his ear, The tidings of all Midgard, for Odin to hear. (Verse 6) Odin feels a fear for his ravens so bold, Lest Huginn be lost in the far northern cold. But for Muninn, he trembles with greater despair, Should memory vanish like smoke in the air. (Final Verse) Huginn and Muninn traversed the sky far and wide, Learning many grim, dark secrets as they've spied. Seeing the actions of gods, giants, and men, Before returning with the news to Odin again.
