Titanic
The stars are bright, the air is cold, A story that will soon be told. I stand upon the deck so high, And look up at the blackest sky. The ship was big, the ship was grand, The finest built by human hand. But now she tilts into the deep, While half the world is fast asleep. I see the boats go in the sea, But there is not a room for me. I watch them lower, one by one, Before my life is even done. The women cry, the children wait, I stand and face my heavy fate. The water creeps up to my feet, Where ice and iron finally meet. The band is playing something slow, To soothe the people here below. The music echoes in the dark, As light goes out from every spark. I find a spot to sit and pray, And wish that it was only day. The golden halls are filled with foam, I know I’ll never make it home. I think of friends I used to know, And places where I’ll never go. The ocean is a hungry thing, I hear the ghost of winter sing. My breath is like a white-grey cloud, The tilting floor is getting loud. A groan of steel, a heavy sigh, As we begin to say goodbye. The people huddle in a crowd, The sound of fear is very loud. I hold a railing, cold and wet, A night that I will not forget. The giant engines stop their beat, I feel the loss of every heat. The "unsinkable" begins to go, Into the silent world below. I do not jump, I do not run, For there is nowhere to be gone. The salt is stinging in my eyes, Beneath the quiet, frozen skies. I hope the ones who got away, Will live to see a sunny day. I hope they tell the tale of us, Who stayed behind without a fuss. The water reaches to my chest, It’s time for me to take my rest. The moon is hidden, gone from sight, Into the middle of the night. My heart is beating fast then slow, As down into the dark I go. The bubbles rise, the ship is gone, I wait alone to see the dawn. But dawn will come for others’ eyes, Beneath the warm and blue-grey skies. For me, the peace is found in sleep, Within the shadows of the deep. The Titanic rests upon the floor, And she will sail the waves no more. I close my eyes and feel the chill, The rolling sea is finally still.
