Tutorial: strung crystal edging
NB: the couching of beads is more clearly demonstrated in the ending segment of this tutorial - apologies, I am badly out of practice filming tutorials! This tutorial will teach you how to add a strung beaded edging to your ornament finish. Although I have used crystals in my examples, many other types of beads would produce fabulous finishes - please explore what's out there and share your finishes by tagging me on Instagram, @kstrachanembroidery You will need: An ornament, with back and hanger not yet attached Fine craft wire - 30 or 32 gauge recommended Curved beading needle from John James Fine finishing needle - I'm using a Bohin #10 milliner's needle Fine sewing thread - I'm using Soie Surfine creme Craft scissors suitable to cut wire (it will nick the blades!) And the beads/crystals of your choice The upcoming Little Nick/Cookie Klaus kits (releasing November 11 at 8:15 am PST at katie-strachan.com/shop) have an optional beading pack that contains enough crystal ovals and rounds to make a single oval edging finish as seen here on Cookie Klaus Recommended sources: Artistic Wire in 30 or 32 gauge can be bought at your local craft store or on Amazon Crystals can be purchased at Fire Mountain Gems (Crystal Passions) or Artbeads (Prestige European Crystal) Finishes shown: Notforgotten Farms Chris Mouse (demonstration piece) uses 5x4mm light Siam olive beads and 3mm crystal rounds, conversion to come in episode 108 Stacy Nash Swans a Swimming Badge uses 3mm White Opal rounds and 2mm Crystal Moonlight rounds, conversion in episode 107: https://youtu.be/jPHeG9J0CLc Candy Cane Wishes by Brenda Gervais has 3mm Siam rounds and 2mm Crystal Moonlight rounds, conversion in episode 20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=16s&v=Wd7o174TZYk Cookie Klaus uses 5x4mm olive beads, color Crystal and 3mm Siam rounds, conversion is exclusive to the coming kits Robin Birdwell uses 5x4mm olive beads, color Aquamarine and 2mm Crystal Moonlight rounds, conversion in episode 95: https://youtu.be/jPHeG9J0CLc I'm using the finishing method on oval/round ornaments (laced over padded mat board, back slip stitched on) demonstrated in my pinkeep finishing - think of it as half a pinkpeep, minus the magnets: https://youtu.be/oS_mdoLZcx8 Bead storage: Darice bead organizer - I've bought these in the past from both Michaels and Amazon - basically, search 'bead organizer' on Amazon and you'll find all kinds of different storage options, including the larger boxes seen here.
