Two Roads

This song is a modern re-imagining of Robert Frost’s 'The Road Not Taken', but it quietly turns the original poem inside out. In Frost’s version, the traveller stands before two roads and must choose one, later imagining that the decision “made all the difference.” In this lyric, however, the traveller discovers something subtler: both roads are necessary, and wisdom lies not in choosing between them but in recognising what each represents. The two paths in the song are symbolic landscapes. The “wild” path stands for inward knowledge — imagination, memory, music, myth, and emotional truth. The “bright” path represents outward knowledge — mathematics, science, structure, and the disciplined search for objective reality. Confusion arises when we mistake one kind of knowing for the other. The lyric suggests that a full human life depends on learning to walk both roads, and above all to know the difference between them. Musically, the setting reflects that balance. The arrangement is a contemporary singer-songwriter piece with a Celtic atmosphere, shaped by harp, acoustic guitar, violin, and flute. These instruments create a reflective tonal world somewhere between folk narrative and philosophical meditation. The accompanying montage follows a middle-aged university don who reaches the edge of a mythic wood and encounters the diverging paths. One route blossoms with flowers, birds, and living creatures; the other glows with crystal formations and milestones engraved with mathematical symbols. As the story unfolds, he explores both landscapes before arriving in a university quadrangle holding two books — Poetry and Cosmology — a visual statement of their shared necessity. This song is not about choosing a road. It is about learning how to walk both.
