This version of pigeon is accessible for people who can't or don't want to lie on the floor, and is safer for knees and sacroiliac joints. It can also be done unobtrusively almost anywhere. Stretching the piriformis and deep rotators can maintain range of motion in the hip joint and take pressure off the sciatic nerve, however if it is unexplainably tight in a sedentary or hypermobile individual, then just stretching will not be the solution; strengthening of the legs, core, glutes and pelvic floor will reduce the burden on the piriformis to hold the pelvis together all alone.
