Coding Through Dance Metaphors
People often shy away from ever-present programming. Employers appreciate understanding some basics for faster communication on the job. It also supports prompt writing. This work is about a basic visual explanation of coding ideas using dance as a metaphor and how to explore the implementation of restrictions in various dances. It is based on the role of restrictions and conditions in coding. We explored codes in different programming languages to delineate various dances and their rules—codes, and music developed by Stu Smith. The Viewer willing to learn or grasp ideas of coding is introduced to basic concepts in coding. This approach provides an overview of programming available and ready to follow https://ursyn.com/v2/art-and-programming. It is an exploration of invisible patterns created by the movement of feet. It is presented to highlight the dynamics behind the image generated by music and the resulting movements of a dancer. The dancer, Mary Jo Lasky, developed her own steps and movements based on particular musical composition rather than following and obeying pre-existing, already-designed rules. All permissions were granted. A theatrical dance performance was produced at the Campus Commons Performance Hall at the UNC Campus.
