Dave Smith Evolver 3.4 Grunge Bug
Demonstration of what is either just undocumented features, or a bug with the "grunge" parameter. This evolver is 3.0 with 3.4. All the oscillators are off here. The only sound generator really is the popping/clicking sound you can get from the envelopes when set to the fastest attack settings of 0. Then just sending that pop through a short delay with the level turned up to 100 and the feedback around 50. The grunge effect is connected to the feedback, but it also has an effect on the delays. Here i showed how it *can* also have a limiting effect on the delay feedback. When you have the delay level and feedback around a certain "sweet spot," turning the grunge effect on or off would cause the delay feedback to either get louder or quieter. just used the level meter in audacity as a guide to know when to turn the grunge back on, otherwise it would start clipping my interface. I made sure to show that the feedback level next to grunge was at 0 and there was no modulation to it. The fact that the grunge effect also effects the 3 separate digital delay lines/taps is undocumented. The limiting type effect on the feedback could possibly be unique to 3.4. After recording this i checked my other desktop, it was on 3.5. I also showed how for some reason, grunge is connected to osc 4. Applying modulation to oscillator 4 affects the delay, but only when the grunge is on. Also, it's only oscillator 4. Because using the same modulation source such as lfo or sequencer routed to oscillator 3 does nothing. I will test this same patch on my other evolver soon. My other desktop evolver is 3.0 with 3.5. I am not sure about the "limiter" part, but im pretty sure that oscillator 4 and grunge being connected somehow is unique to 3.4 (or previous versions? At the end i show a screenshot of the support page showing how to check which version your evolver is on. If you have 3.4 and would like to play around with this, let me know and i can put this patch online.
