Deadbug

Mastering the Deadbug is the difference between having "show muscles" and having true functional strength. This movement forces you to battle against your lower back's natural urge to arch, building a core that is rock-solid and bulletproof under pressure. THE GOAL: Maintain absolute spinal neutrality and "anti-extension" while moving opposite limbs. HOW TO DO IT: The Set-Up: Lie flat on your back. Raise your arms straight up toward the ceiling and lift your legs into a "tabletop" position (knees bent at 90 degrees directly over your hips). The Crush: This is the most important step. Press your lower back into the floor so firmly that a piece of paper couldn't be slid underneath you. Maintain this "crush" the entire time. The Movement: Slowly lower your right arm behind your head while simultaneously extending your left leg toward the floor. The Return: Once your arm and leg are hovering just above the ground, exhale forcefully and "pull" them back to the starting position using your deep core. Switch sides. COACH’S KEYS: Slow is Smooth: The slower you go, the harder this is. Do not rush. This is about control, not cardio. The "Gap" Test: If your lower back peels off the floor as your leg lowers, you’ve gone too far. Only lower your leg as deep as you can while keeping your back flat.
