Hebrews Study 6 Personal commitment: Read a chapter each day from Leviticus and Hebrews Chapter 2 Verse 9a- Because the suffering of death- not of death but an excruciating death on a Cross! (Phillipians 2:8) Note: If we contemplate the fact that no one took Jesus’ life (John 19:10-11) and that He gave it up to the Father once He completed His mission (Luke 23:46) and that He had a sinless body not prone to physical death by sickness, disease or even the Cross. He not only bore our limited pain but took pain to the fullest extent, far beyond the pains we get. If we experience great pain our body shuts itself down and goes into shock or even a coma! Jesus endured mental physical and spiritual pain to the further extent to make sure that he covered and bore all of our iniquities! 9b- Glory and Honor- His obedience to the Fathers will and His substitutionary death,(2 Corinthians 5:21) earned him a Name and position above all others (Phillipians 2:8-9) 9c- by the Grace of God- this is referring to the gracious act and gift of God, sending His Son to die on our behalf without any expectation of return on our part. Verse 10a- it was fitting (suitable) for Him- without humiliation and suffering, there could be no redemption (a purchasing from a slave market of sin) and without redemption, there could be no future glorification (Romans 8:18,29 & 30) 10b- for whom and through whom-(See Colossians 1:15-17) 10c- to perfect- means to accomplish or consummate. In His Divine nature Jesus was already perfect but through His sufferings, his human nature through his obedience was brought to maturity in order that he might be a compassionate and empathetic high priest ( Read Hebrews 5:8,9, 7:24-27 & 1 Peter 2:21) Author of our Salvation- the GK is archegon and means pioneer, originator, founder, captain, Prince and chief leader. He is one Who blazes a trail for others to follow of Whose personal triumph becomes the shared victory of a people. Here in Hebrews the writer accredits Jesus’ this Christoligical Title through the themes of His Creation, redemption and the consummation of the ages! (Acts 3:15, Hebrews 10:20, Hebrews 12:2 and Philippians 1:6) Verse 11- He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified- the GK is hagiazon and means to set apart or be set apart as a consecrated utensil in the temple used solely for the purposes of God 11b-12-not ashamed to call them Brothers- brothers in the GK is (Adelphus) the a is a connective particle and delphus means the womb. Now we are His relatives from the womb! (Psalm 22:22) Interesting before Jesus’ Resurrection he called them disciples, friend and sheep but immediately after His Resurrection he told Mary, “ go to my Brothers and tell them” (John 20:17, Romans 8:29 & 1 Corinthians 15:20) Verse 13- Quoted from (Isaiah 56:3-4 and then again Isaiah 8:18) This scripture emphasizes the points made in verses 9-11 that Jesus fully identifies Himself with mankind by taking on human nature. Verse 14-18 He “partook” The necessity of the. Virgin Birth (Read Genesis 3:15) Known as the protoevangelium or the first Gospel.(Good News) Promise, Enmity to victorious final victory…Also read Isaiah 7:14 and the fulfillment in Matthew 1:22-23 Compare the Hebrew and Greek word Virgin. Hebrew is Al-mah and it means a young woman of marriageable age. There is no instance in the Bible where it can be proved that this is ever speaking of a non-virgin girl. This word in the Old Testament always describes the moral and physical purity of a young lady who can be considered the potential of marriage where it’s red in the context. Virgin GK is parthenos which appears 15 times in the New Testament and always describes a person who has not had sexual intercourse. It is the word used in the Stu agent, which is the translation into the Greek directly from the Hebrew word Almah. (See Jesus birth in Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:27 & the Ten Virgins of Matthew 25:1) Note: 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 Jesus is the Second Adam, a quickening (life giving) spirit. Further understanding and importance of the Virgin birth: The Kinsman Redeemer-A picture of Jesus Three requirements to be the Kinsman Redeemer: He must be a close relative 3:12 He must be willing 4:6-8 He must be able 4:8-10 Ruth 4:16-19 The Line and seed of Abraham and of king David to King Jesus! Propitiation- GK-hil-as-kom-ahee appeasement and satisfaction of Divine wrath upon sin. To extend Grace and mercy to the wrath of God on sin and ultimately to the sinner Temptation/Testing to be a perfect, compassionate and empathetic High Priest He was tempted in all points like unto man yet without sin. This makes Him the perfect and Eternal High Priest and Mediator between God and man. In First John this is how we test the spirits as to whether they are AntiChrist or not via the Virgin Birth (Read First John 4:1-3) Lastly the fulfillment of His Kinsman Redeemer work (Revelation 5) Brother Jeff Clay
