Hebrews Study 8-Chapter 3
Hebrews Study 8 Key Verse Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher (perfecter) of our faith; who, for the joy that was set down before him endured the cross, despising the shame, sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Personal commitment: Read a chapter each day from Leviticus and Hebrews Chapter 3 Verses 1-2 Greater than Moses His office- He’s a faithful, Eternal Apostle and High Priest His work- He’s the builder of the house His Person- He is God’s exalted Son Consider Jesus- this is not a flighty or fanciful attitude like, I know the big man up in the sky, but an intense gazing stare to examine his person and work. (See John 3:14 and Numbers 21:4-9) Note: Verse 8 “when they look at it.” The Hebrew is we-ra-ah and means to gaze, inspect, perceive, observe, regard, give attention and discernment Verses 3-6 Over His own house- the GK here is oikos and means household. (See Acts 16:34 the jailers whole house was Saved-GK panoikei) Whose house we are- Jesus said, “on this rock I I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18) Peters statement, Jesus says, did not come from himself but from the Father. Jesus was saying that upon this Revelation He would build His church and not upon Peter! The word for church is Ecclesia and it means, specially called out ones. (Also read 1 Peter 2:4-10 Living Stones) Holding on doesn’t mean that we retain our own Salvation. Continuance in our faith by the aid of the Holy Spirit is the sign of reality, which is called, Perseverance Salvation is either possession or only profession Confidence and boasting- We obviously have no personal confidence and boasting in ourselves. Our confidence is, alone, in the finished work of Christ (Romans 3:27) Verses 7-11 Today- Psalm 95:7 the writer uses three times in verses 13, 15 and here in verse 7. There is a sense of urgency to these Hebrew believers. This is also the writer’s background narrative (exposition) A warning to those in this church who have not yet believed. Key verse 19 states that they won’t enter because of unbelief! There were some, those that “fall away” in chapter 6:4-8, who fall away because they had tasted and were enlightened but not convinced in the claims and proofs of Jesus. It says in verse 9, “where your fathers put me to the test, and saw my works (miracles) for 40 years- and they still did not TRUST in God. You cannot win those back to God because they were stiff-necked, hard-hearted and rebellious! Hebrews 3:19 these unbelieving Hebrews in this church were like those in the wilderness where for 40 years saw many incredible miracles ( Red Sea split, eater from the rock, quails and man a to eat, clothes never failed nor shoes, a cloud by day and fire by night) so, they also tasted of the good things of God and were enlightened but yet they were unbelieving and perished and were never won back but died in the desert of sin and unbelief! My rest- in context this has duplicity in the fact that many of the people would not enter the rest in Canaan land due to their lack of faith, but this is only a picture of the eternal rest, he desired for them and also for those who come to faith in Christ to receive a future eternal rest where we will never again labor to achieve through personal effort, a righteousness that pleases God. Verse 12- Brethren here is speaking directly to those in this body, like these in the wilderness, who are still in their unbelief of Christ's finished work on their behalf. Verse 13- there is individual accountability but also corporate responsibility intended here. (Read Luke 4:16 and Hebrews 10:25) Verse 14- Repeats the theme of perseverance Verses 15-19 The quotation from Psalm 95:7,8 is here repeated. The first time it was emphasizing the urgency of the term, “Today.” This second quotation is emphasizing rebellion. Note: verse 16 “provoked” verse 17 “sinned” verse 18“disobedient “ verse 19 “unbelief” In verse 19 it is summed up that these Israelites who died in the wilderness were victims of their own unbelief! The Pharisees had the same hard-heartedness Review Luke 16:19-31 but specifically verse 31! Therefore… Roman’s 5:1-8 Let us live out our key verse daily! (Hebrews 12:1-2) Blessing, Brother Jeff Clay
