Every year when the Ostrich ferns just start to come up, illegal, unethical and untrained foragers come into Hampton and behead entire colonies. Cutting all of the fiddleheads off an Ostrich fern at best stops that plant's growth cycle for the year and at worst, kills the plant and weakens the overall colony.
It is ILLEGAL to forage on public lands, especially native species like this one.
If you want to learn how to forage wild plants, do it right. Learn how each plant reproduces so that you are not harming its future growth. #ferns #ottawa
