#lowkey session 05 : SATWO

The melodies and the sections. The strings and the keys. Rafiz and Maz. Satwo is full of counterpoints. They compose with a lot of dynamics that are understated yet tasteful, taking you through ruminating singing and lyrics embelished with subtle surprises - a borrowed note or chord here and there, timing changes, extended sections; all charming elements that slowly draw you in. These elements work in contrast, setitng up and highlighting each other. Untok Kita's chorus is a fine example (of this) - Rafiz and Maz belting out aching refrains in harmony through counter melodies, before subverting with a chord change that leads back to the intrigue of the verse. For the uninitiated, Satwo's low-key session is an introduction to their masterful compositions. For fans, it is a reminder and a celebration. They lament, they long, and they lift all at the same time, as the haunting chorus of Cahaya Malam ably demonstrates. Every section leads and transitions into the next seamlessly, leaving at just the right time to either return and resolve into a previous section or arrive somewhere new. Satwo's music is full of moments. Each is a tale of its own intertwined with others to form a story in the shape of a song. Some of these moments - like in Gelap - are Coldplay-eque, taking you back to Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. These moments are to be cherished. Satwo can seem like a slightly darker Banda Neira tinged with Coldplay-isms, but that would be reductive. Because Satwo is Satwo - crafty, grounded, and compelling.
