#lowkey session 01 : On A Trip
To some, post-rock might seem like a remnant from the previous decades, but there is no denying the immersive atmospheric quality of the music and its ruminating melodic sensibilities. Describing themselves as a vulnerable post-rock band, On A Trip is anything but vulnerable - their music forceful and driving as it is tender and introspective. There is always a sense of journey and story to their songs, this in itself a ready argument against those who might feel that post-rock is more about looking back then it is about being present in the moment. Music is emotive, so it can be easy to forget (or even truly realize) the lasting impact of Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking emergence almost half a century ago. On A Trip’s set sees them playing in a less complete setup (and lineup) than they are used to, which only served to highlight the band’s strength in songwriting and arrangement. Despite having to break their lush compositions down for us, the band’s penchant for minute details still managed to take us on a trip through a sonic landscape, reminding us that music – much like life – is about taking our own time, and space. Missing Home underlines the band’s spontaneous creativity (with some crafty use of a screwdriver), Kajang’s droning bassline is a peek into their darker and heavier influences, and Short Song is a sample of their guitar dynamics and melodic intuition. The recording finished with a sense of unfinished business. We wanted more, but there was only so much time. The band felt it to; they kept contact after the recording, anxious about their performance and sound (some songs took a few takes). Perhaps this wasn’t the time and space for more – that should be a much bigger setup, audience, and stage.
