In this video I am demonstrating the lumbar decompression exercise. This exercise is great for decreasing compression in the lower back that can cause pinched nerves. It is ideal for those with stenosis and arthritis of the back. Instructions: 1) Stand in front of a surface that is at hip height or just lower (a countertop works well and you can use a pillow to pad the surface). Bring the front of your hips to the table surface and rest your belly on the top of the table propping yourself up on your elbows. Keep your feet firmly on the ground for support. 2) Slowly and gently let your buttocks get heavy and drop towards the floor until you feel a stretch or decompression in the lower back. 3) Hold for the prescribed amount of time. Repeat exercise as prescribed by your physical therapist. Tips: -You have to make sure you have solid support through your elbows and feet. -Try to keep your abdominal and hip muscles completely relaxed during this exercise to allow for the decompression. -Make sure to keep your pelvis square and equally in contact with the table at all times. -If you feel worse pain or numbness/tingling during or after, stop the exercise and speak to your physical therapist.
