Puff Puff Midge
The Puff Puff midge is an adult (dry) midge pattern. This works great and is easy to tie - even on the smaller hook sizes. Start with a thin wire scud shaped hook. Start your SemperFli Nanosilk in grey just behind the hook eye. Create a thread base deep into the bend of the hook, taking wraps to ensure the color of the hook is not showing through the thread. End with your thread at its deepest point in the hook bend. Color a small amount of your thread black (I use a Sharpie), avoiding touching your grey body with the marker. Now take open wraps of your now black thread up the abdomen. This will create a distinct rib on the fly. Cut a piece of white razor foam a little less in width than the hook gap. Tie it in about an eye length back from the hook eye. Secure it down with thread wraps moving back toward the hook bend a little less than a quarter of the way behind the hook eye. Now, wrap forward towards the eye to secure the foam and compress it. Fold the razor foam forward over the center of the hook shank and secure it with a few wraps. Finally, tie in a white CDC oiler puff right behind the hook eye on top of the hook shank so the fibers extend over the eye. Use the butt end to adjust it to the right length. Once you have the length you want, secure the oiler puff, and take a few thread wraps on the hook itself, underneath the foam and the oiler puff. Whip finish and remove your thread. Trim the butt end of the oiler puff so that a small amount remains visible. Then trim any excess razor foam extending over the hook eye so it just overhangs the eye. The fly is finished.
