Voles are often confused with moles, but they are field mice that create flat pathways of dead grass rather than raised tunnels. These pathways lead to burrows where voles live, usually located under shrubs, rocks, or brushy areas. Voles spend much of their time underground but come above ground to feed, causing noticeable lawn damage. They are active year-round and reproduce quickly, which can lead to significant damage in lawns, golf courses, and crops. During winter, when green plants are scarce, voles feed on roots and bark, sometimes killing shrubs and young trees. Many people notice vole damage in spring when dead grass paths become visible as lawns green up. Proper identification is important because vole control methods differ from those for moles. Snap traps baited with peanut butter and grain like an oatmeal are an effective control method when checked and rebaited daily. Reducing food sources, such as spilled bird seed, and staying diligent is key to managing vole populations. Look up “FOR-172 UKY” to access the UK publication on Vole Issues in Kentucky.
