Topic 6: Dr Wes Robertson Creativity, play, & non-standard language use in community language learning In this presentation, Wes will discuss how gamification and engagement with slang, puns, and other forms of language usually absent from the classroom can be an important and motivating practice for learners. Throughout the discussion, we will examine ways to use games to guide language-use activities and reduce hesitation, and explore projects that can encourage language learners to explore their target language in "non-traditional" spaces. Dr. Wes Robertson is a sociolinguist of Japanese working as a Senior Lecturer in Languages & Cultures at Macquarie University. His research focuses on issues of language variation and identity, especially when the variation is restricted to written modes of communication.
